Sowing

Sow early indoors in moist seed compost. Don't cover — light-germinating. Pot on to a bigger pot once the true leaves appear.

Care

Cut off spent flowers for longer blooming. Happy in beds and pots alike.

Harvest & storage

Snapdragon works in the kitchen — decorative and edible. The flowers are gorgeous in salads, on cheese boards and on sandwich cakes. Slightly bitter, but candied they even work in desserts.

Tips & lessons learned

Snapdragon blooms all autumn. There are low varieties at 20–50 cm — perfect for pots and edging — while the tall ones pass a metre and make elegant cut flowers. We grow mixed colours together in one flower bed. It becomes a sea of snapdragons in loud, happy colours.

They take a fair bit of cold, even a touch of frost. It's lovely to have something still flowering when the high-summer plants have called it a season.

A friendly reminder: every garden plays by its own rules. Zones, soil, weather and a hundred small things decide what works — so this is how I did it and what worked for me, not a promise. Try, learn, adjust, try again.. that's half the fun anyway.
